Job Description

Position Objectives

  • Serve as the Lead attorney and/or oversee legal professionals supporting innovation clients within Takeda’s global research and development function; partner with and advise senior corporate executives globally on complex legal transactions, including novel technology-based initiatives
  • Serve as a senior legal advisor to Takeda’s global development product team for assigned Takeda pipeline products, including late stage and/or commercial products; serve as a resource to proactively identify and connect the team to specialized legal resources as needed


  • Provide proactive legal and strategic guidance to senior leaders of assigned global product teams and other senior level leaders in the organization
  • Draft and negotiate complex and varied legal agreements including consortium and collaboration agreements, while effectively collaborating with other legal colleagues, and cross-functional colleagues in ethics & compliance, and procurement as applicable
  • Identify and analyze global legal, business and reputational risks to the company and propose appropriate solutions
  • Serve as Senior Legal Advisor on assigned discovery and development projects coordinating with other global colleagues as needed
  • Develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with the company’s business, code of responsibility, its people, products, markets, facilities, customers and competitors and utilizes that knowledge in providing guidance and counsel to internal clients.
  • Establish a rapport and a working relationship with global research and development organization personnel at all levels to encourage and continue the proactive use of in-house legal counsel
  • Participate in piloting Agile workflow concepts to enhance legal service efficiency while reducing unnecessary complexity
  • Contribute to cultivating a company culture that reflects a strong commitment to ethics, patients, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion
  • May have responsibility for coaching or supervising more junior attorneys, paralegals and support staff on individual projects

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Solid understanding of the laws and regulations of drug development and commercialization
  • Strong experience and skills drafting and negotiating complex consortium and collaboration agreements
  • Background in supporting initiatives including: Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence (ML, NLP, MV), Extended Realities (AR, VR), DLTs (Blockchain), Health Robotics & Med Techs, 3D Printing
  • Strong working knowledge of data protection and privacy laws tangential to research-based activities including: scientific research involving patient-derived data, clinical trials, patient support services, digital health information


  • Serve as a senior legal member of global product teams or senior legal advisor to therapeutic area or discovery leadership teams contributing business and legal expertise/guidance to product development and strategy
  • Maintain an enterprise view in developing and delivering legal guidance to client base
  • Lead educational sessions for legal group and company
  • Select and manage external counsel and associated spend


  • Collaborate with legal and non-legal colleagues that contribute to the company’s drug discovery and development efforts
  • Collaborate on cross-functional deal teams to drive the company’s objectives in a compliant and appropriate manner


  • Have an interest in exploring new business/legal structures to achieve business development objectives
  • Explore piloting new approaches to improve legal services in a risk appropriate way


  • Highly experienced and skilled in drafting, negotiating complex legal documents in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in navigating successfully in a highly matrixed global work environment


  • 8+ years of experience practicing law (law firm and/or in-house), preferably 4+ years of in-house experience
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly
  • Mature and professional demeanor with a high degree of self-motivation
  • Strong organizational skills, including careful attention to detail and ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments and maintain strict deadlines through effective time management
  • J.D., licensed to practice law in the U.S.
  • Active membership and in good standing in a state bar
