Senior Translational Medicine Physician-Scientist

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE:

  • This position is part of the Rare Disease Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU); Search and Translational Science Group, which will be responsible for transition of programs between preclinical into early clinical research. The translational physician will work closely and in collaboration with the Drug Discovery Unit and Global Project Teams in the Rare Disease Therapy Area (TA).  This role embraces the principles of a translational/exploratory mindset, with a focus on deep scientific rigor and operational excellence.

  • This position is accountable for the design, execution and delivery of Early Clinical Development activities within the area of rare diseases to time, quality, value and budget. The activities will focus on Translational Research and Early Clinical Development with an emphasis on rare hematological disorders.  There will also be the opportunity to support the Search activities of the TA to identify potential assets or platforms to in-license or partner and collaborate with CEI colleagues in R&D Business Development.

  • The working model is truly adaptable and operates by a lean and entrepreneurial team utilizing external services and tapping into the extensive knowledge based network (internal and external). The position will also build a network within Takeda Rare Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) to identify new opportunities of areas of mutual interest and to seek internal experts for validation of ideas and experimental plans where appropriate.

  • The position will provide a ‘challenge the staus quo’ perspective when collaborating and problem solving to deliver therapeutic candidates in a more resource and cost efficient manner.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  • To provide early pre/clinical development leadership, by designing and executioning the translational research plan as part of the overall asset strategy, focusing on innovative development strategies from candidate selection (CS) through to biomarker driven early proof of concept in rare diseases (aligned to the TAU strategy).
  • Act as a key interface within the Rare Disease Therapeutic Area to ensure seamless transition of translational programs from internal/external sources through to e-POC and handover to GPT.
  • Accountable for all operational aspects of the early translational development program in partner-ship with selected CRO’s, consultants and where appropriate internal functional representatives.
  • Partner with the broader Translational Team to represent the portfolio to senior management, GPT and governance bodies or scientific advisory boards.
  • Support interactions with external stakeholders (e.g. regulatory authorities, KoL’s, patient advocacy groups (PAGs)); internal stakeholders (e.g. Rare Drug Discovery Unit and Rare Disease Therapeutic Area Unit colleagues).
  • Accountable for patient advocacy initiatives, identifying and engaging relevant external PAGs.
  • Provides translational medicine expertise for external opportunities, including participation in due diligence teams

CORE ELEMENTS RELATED TO THIS ROLE: 

  • This position is responsible for the design, execution and delivery of Early Clinical Development activities within the area of rare diseases to time, quality, value and budget working closely with early project teams. The activities will focus on developing and executing on multi-year translational research and clinical activities to identify and validate novel markers/tools for target engagement and surrogates of clinical efficacy. This position with collaborate with drug discovery, QTS, DMPK/Clinical Pharmacology in key disease areas where the TAU has programs in early development.
  • Key contributor to, and co-leader (with CEI) of, Rare Diseases Business Development search and evaluation, triage, review, and diligence

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

•             Medical degree required / MD-PhD (preferred) .

•             Experience of rare disease drug development preferred.

•             Early clinical development and/or translational/experimental medicine expertise.

•             Clinical development experience within industry, including early clinical trial design.

•             Previous interactions with regulatory authorities and submissions.

•             Familiar with principles of GCP / ICH.

•             Ability to identify and set up external collaborations with external vendors, academics, medical charities, consultants and patient advocacy groups as necessary.

•             Strong interpersonal and people skills, the successful candidate will have a proven background interacting with individuals at a variety of functional levels with both internal and external personnel.

•             Demonstrated strategic thinker with an ability to create and drive a shared understanding of long term vision.

•             Highly collaborative to work cross functionally, who is motivated to drive projects forward and willing to execute the plan to completion. A can-do attitude is essential.

•             Operates with a sense of urgency and proactively responds to problems and opportunities using a resourceful and innovative mindset with enthusiasm in a timely matter.

•             Results and performance driven, assuming personal ownership and accountability for business results and solutions. Need to be able to motivate individuals in a cross-functional, matrixed organisation and project team setting.
