Job Description


This role represents a great opportunity for an individual with expertise in medical affairs to step into their first leadership position.

They will manage a team of Medical Information Officers and Scientific Executives, whose roles are split between providing medical information to healthcare professionals and patients and providing scientific support for our therapy area aligned business units.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building medical affairs capabilities across the Takeda UK and Ireland business. As a member of our Medical Lead Team, they will play an important role in setting strategy for the Medical Directorate as a whole.

We are looking to recruit an individual with a number of years of medical affairs experience behind them, likely gained in a Scientific or Medical Advisor role (or similar). They may have limited line management experience to date but must have a real passion for developing people and driving innovation.

The Role

•  Ensure provision of a high-quality medical information service to health care professionals, patients and other customer groups for Takeda UK and IRE in line with ABPI/IPHA requirements. 

•  Effectively lead a team of Medical Information Officers and Scientific Executives, ensuring that Scientific Executives are given the opportunity to develop their medical affairs skills to enable them to progress to Medical / Scientific Advisor roles in due course.

•  Ensure the team of Scientific Executives provide effective scientific support to their aligned business units, helping them deliver against key business priorities. 

•  Ensure a robust framework is in place to support the development of medical affairs capabilities across the Medical Directorate.


•  Responsible for overseeing the development of core medical affairs capabilities across the directorate.

•  Project manage the medical information outsourced vendor at a LOC level and ensure the in-house medical information team delivers high-quality standard and customised responses for second-line enquiry handling. All responses must conform to all relevant legal requirements, Codes of Practice, company guidelines and policies.

•  Form collaborative working relationships with global medical information to ensure that the UK medical information service is aligned to global policies.

•  Recruit and develop a team of Medical Information Officers and Scientific Executives. Scientific Executives are aligned to therapy areas and will be expected to develop subject matter expertise in both the relevant therapy area and in the discipline of medical affairs. It is expected that Scientific Executives will be developed to allow them to move into Scientific Advisor roles in due course.

•  As a member of the Takeda UK / Ireland Medical Lead Team contribute to the strategic evolution of the directorate, as well as developing and delivering various continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Experience

•  Relevant scientific degree – life sciences, pharmacy, medicine

•  Medical Affairs experience, including the delivery of core medical affairs activities e.g., advisory boards, medical education, medical communication, and copy approval

•  Ability to utilise understanding of the pharmaceutical industry to help improve the medical information service and the scientific support provided to the business units

•  Coaching or mentoring experience required. Previous line management experience is preferred but not essential

•  Strong planning, organising, decision making and problem-solving skills

•  Experience of cross functional working
