The Opportunity
A ServiceNow Senior Discovery Developer is responsible for leading the implementation, configuration, and optimization of the Discovery process within ServiceNow. Their role focuses on ensuring an accurate and up-to-date Configuration Management Database (CMDB) by automating the identification of IT assets and services across the organization’s infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Setup and configuration of the ServiceNow Discovery module to identify and map IT infrastructure components, including servers, applications, databases, and network devices.
- Develop and maintain MID Server configurations for executing discovery probes and patterns.
- Ensure discovered data is populated accurately in the Configuration Management Database (CMDB).
- Validate CI (Configuration Item) relationships and dependencies with business services.
- Work collaboratively with CMDB and ITSM teams to align with organizational processes.
- Customize and optimize Discovery patterns and probes for efficient data collection.
- Develop and maintain custom scripts and identifiers to discover non-standard or proprietary IT resources.
- Provide technical leadership to Discovery teams and guide junior developers and administrators.
- Work closely with Operations teams to continuously monitor, maintain, and improve the health, stability, and visibility of Discovery and Service Mapping, ensuring reliable data flow, optimal performance, and accurate CMDB population.
- Customize IRE rules to prevent CI duplication and maintain CMDB accuracy across Discovery, Service Mapping, and integrations.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to design discovery policies that meet business and compliance needs.
- Ensure consistent and reliable data discovery to keep the CMDB accurate and up to date.
- Perform audits and reconciliations of discovered data for compliance.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for Discovery-related issues, such as network accessibility, authentication, or missing data.
- Identify areas of improvement and optimize Discovery schedules, performance, and resource utilization.
- Document Discovery processes, MID Server architecture, and CI attribute mappings.
- Train team members and end-users on Discovery workflows and best practices.
- Leverage automation to streamline the Discovery process for large-scale IT environments (e.g., cloud assets, hybrid environments).
- Work on extending Discovery capabilities to platforms like AWS, Azure.
- Ensure Discovery integrates seamlessly with other ITOM modules such as Service Mapping, Event Management, and Orchestration.
- Build and optimize service maps for dependencies between applications, IT resources, and business services.
- Engage in discussions with key leaders and architects to strategize Discovery architecture and governance to meet business and IT goals.
- Manage ongoing upgrades and keep the Discovery module aligned with ServiceNow’s latest features.
- Provide support for end-users and IT teams in ITOM-related functionality.
- Write and debug scripts to extend ITOM capabilities as per business needs.
- Build custom APIs or processes when necessary.
- Create and maintain technical documentation for configurations, mappings, and integrations.
- Work with business stake holders, product owners, architects and process owners to align ITOM solutions with business goals and IT service management (ITSM) needs.
- Design, implement, and maintain ServiceNow Service Mapping to create accurate end‑to‑end visibility of business services, applications, and underlying infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience with all Service Mapping types, including top‑down mapping, bottom‑up mapping, traffic‑based discovery, tag‑based mapping, and entry‑point‑based application modelling, across monolithic, multi‑tier, microservices, containerized, and hybrid application architectures.
- Build and optimize application and business service maps, ensuring accurate CI relationships to support impact analysis, Event Management, and Incident/Problem Management use cases.
- Implement and manage Service Mapping integrations using Service Graph Connectors (SGC), including AppDynamics and other APM / monitoring tools, to enrich application dependency data and service context within the CMDB.
- Troubleshoot and continuously improve Service Mapping accuracy and performance, including resolving incomplete maps, missing dependencies, credential issues, pattern failures, and data inconsistencies across Discovery and Service Mapping.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
- Familiarity with CMDB best practices, CI classes, and data governance.
- Hands-on experience with MID Servers, probes, and patterns.
- Strong scripting capabilities (JavaScript, PowerShell, Python).
- Experience with cloud discovery (e.g., AWS, Azure).
- Experience with Cloud management and Terraform capabilities.
- Experience with other data sources (e.g., Tanium, SCCM, Armis, 1E, Microsoft Intune, etc).
- Experience in discovering OT visibility data sources (e.g. Armis etc).
- Experience with ServiceNow agent (ACC, DEX) based configuration Item discovery.
- Experience with other Service Mapping using SGC (AppDynamics)
- Understanding of network protocols (SNMP, WMI, SSH, etc.) for Discovery.
- Experience in implementing Service Graph Connector, Integration Hubs.
- Familiarity of ServiceNow ITOM AI capabilities (NOW assist, Agentic AI etc.)
- Excellent communication skills with ability to communicate complex technical concepts and align organization on decisions.
- ServiceNow System Administrator certification (required).
- ServiceNow Application Developer certification (preferred).
- ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist - Discovery (required).
- ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist – Service Mapping (preferred).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to independently lead troubleshooting calls and provide hands‑on support to Operations teams whenever required.
