Job Description

Takeda's Singapore biologics manufacturing facility focuses on manufacturing potentially life-saving medicines for patients suffering from rare blood disorders such as Hemophilia A and B. As part of the company’s Biologics Operating Unit network, the site is Takeda’s only biologics drug substance manufacturing facility in Asia. The facility has two buildings, including manufacturing suites and laboratories, as well as Takeda’s first positive energy building certified by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark scheme in 2022.


Position: Senior Process Sciences Engineer

Location: Woodlands, Singapore

About the role

The Senior Process Sciences Engineer will plan and execute laboratory experiments, use tests or small-scale investigations. Lead small-scale studies and data gathering for manufacturing operations (process investigations, improvement projects).  Lead the evaluation of process improvements and design of small-scale experiments to implement process improvements. Act as technical subject matter expert (SME) in small scale experiment troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Define and align the requirements for complex laboratory experiments according to internal and external guidelines for small scale process development and validation, process investigations and improvements, qualified scale down models and material use tests.

  • Design, plan and execute small scale experiments according to project timelines. Lead discussions to align experimental requirements and plan with the relevant stakeholders.

  • Plan resources required for experiments. Work with the Process Sciences Manager and cross functional teams to allocate relevant resources to support and execute the experiments.

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for issues faced during experimental runs and setup. Collaborate with Pharm Sci /GMSci or relevant cross functional teams on problem solving for relevant issues faced during the small-scale runs. Propose mitigation or solutions to resolve the issues.

  • Support Process Sciences engineers in the execution of the lab experiments.

  • Coach and train junior Process Sciences engineers in technical understanding and execution of laboratory experiments.

  • Support analytical activities relevant to laboratory scale experiments. Work with the relevant cross functional or global teams to ensure that the testing support are in place for experiments.

  • Create and review of laboratory documentation including procedures, forms, protocols, and reports for routine activities and / or experiments according to relevant quality standards. Align the documentation according to quality standard where applicable, and global and internal requirements.

  • Analyse and summarize laboratory results. Review and approve laboratory results and reports.

  • Perform laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration as per laboratory procedures. Troubleshoot equipment failures.

  • Lead the implementation of new technologies for small scale model development and improvement.

  • Lead implementation of new equipment in the laboratory.

  • Lead 5S/6S activities and support execution of housekeeping activities within the laboratory.

  • Work with Process Sciences engineers to ensure that the required consumables and raw materials are ordered and available for small scale runs. Order and stock the materials where required.

  • Support global initiatives/strategies for the Manufacturing Sciences laboratory. Participate in global discussion on laboratory network strategy/alignment. Work with and support the Process Sciences Manager to implement these initiatives on site.

  • Support EHS audit walkdowns, and close audit CAPAs on time.

  • Responsibility to adhere to any applicable EHS requirements.

  • Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

What you bring to Takeda:

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering with minimum 6 years of relevant experience or master’s degree with minimum 4 years of relevant experience.

  • Hands-on experience with cell culture/ upstream processes and/or downstream purification processes in a small scale lab environment.

  • Hands on experience in scale down implementation, experiment DOE and lab scale process troubleshooting.

  • Prior experience with process development is an added advantage.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong experience in laboratory operations for biological upstream or downstream processes with ability to coach and train junior Process Sciences engineers.

  • Strong knowledge of analytical and cell culture/purification laboratory equipment with ability to coach and train junior Process Sciences engineers

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Good project management, stakeholder management and conflict management skills.

  • Willingness to learn

  • Team worker/ able to work in matrix environment

  • Independent worker/ Self starter

  • Flexible to be able to work after office hours where required to support laboratory experiments
