Job Description

PURPOSE:  

Accountable for strategic leadership of the Gastroenterology team in Takeda Canada. Provides clinical/medical expertise, ensures medical excellence and compliance with applicable policies, manages a team of Medical Leads and Field Medical teams, and contributes strategic, medical, clinical and scientific guidance to other business areas in Takeda Canada and to the global therapeutic leadership group.

This role requires a strategic thinker who can inspire others, focus on key priorities, and elevate organizational capabilities in line with Takeda's Leadership Behaviors.  

KEY JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  • Is accountable for the Canadian medical/clinical strategy for the therapeutic area and partnering with cross-functional teams to develop overarching Brand plans and aligned Medical strategies.

  • Oversees the development and implementation of these strategies and annual project plans.

  • Identifies and provides mitigation strategies for issues identified in the therapeutic area, identifying and responding strategically to internal and external drivers of change.

  • Develop strong R&D and local evidence generation plans for the therapeutic area and be a strong advocate for investment in R&D in Canada by building strong relationships with Global and Regional R&D/Medical Affairs heads.

  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with national opinion leaders in therapeutic area of expertise. Represents the interests of Takeda Canada to these networks, individuals or organizations and ensures that therapeutic team establishes and maintains comparable networks and relationships.

  • Oversee the design and implementation of local trials and studies and acts as a local Medical Monitor for clinical studies when required.

  • Develops and directs all staff resources (Field Medical team and Medical Leads) within the Therapeutic Area. Responsible for recruitment, training and performance management of direct reports.  Ensures all team members are trained on and act in accordance with Canadian and provincial laws, regulations and policies and Takeda policies guidelines, quality assurance and compliance requirements.

  • Accountable for providing Medical leadership for assigned therapeutic area on cross-functional Canada and Global teams. Ensures operational and functional collaboration with other departments and global therapeutic groups to deliver the portfolio and project. Represents Canada LOC on Global workstreams as required.

  • Ensures that medical/scientific data, support and expertise is provided by the team both internally and externally to government bodies, institutions, medical and health professionals, associations and networks. Ensures the correct interpretation and communication of scientific data related to Takeda products and ensures clinical evidence, promotional material and non-promotional material is scientifically sound and in compliance with Takeda standards, SOP’s and policies.

  • Continuously maintains awareness of external activities, product development and scientific literature related to the therapeutic area and ensures leadership is kept aware of any developments impacting business direction. May generate summaries and critical assessments if appropriate.

  • Provides strategic direction and oversight to managers across various functional areas, prioritizing the successful execution of major initiatives and ensuring that budgets, schedules, and performance standards are both realistically established and achieved. Your role focuses on strategic impact rather than day-to-day operational involvement.

COMPETENCIES:

Occupational Knowledge and Skills

  • Deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, product development, lifecycle, and commercialization processes, including key functions such as R&D, Regulatory, and Medical Affairs.  

  • Thorough understanding of legal, compliance, and regulatory guidelines related to medical affairs in the pharmaceutical industry.  

  • Knowledge of the Health Canada policies and other federal and provincial policies impacting the area.   

  • Medical competence to understand the disease area landscape, contribute to the patient journey, and define product differentiation and value. 

  • Knowledge of pertinent external treatment guidelines and current standards of practice for relevant disease areas.  

  • Therapeutic knowledge, with a preference for prior experience in the therapeutic area, demonstrated ability to quickly gain in-depth understanding of various disease states.  

  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific results and present complex scientific/medical information to both scientific and lay audiences. 

  • Proven ability to develop and operationalize strategies and tactical plans.  

  • Strong demonstrated leadership skills to manage and develop a range of professionals within the therapeutic area.

  • Proven expertise in matrix project leadership and operational project management, with the ability to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously and facilitate cross-functional collaboration effectively. 

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and apply strong business acumen.  

  • Financial skills to forecast and manage a budget, and to understand the business implications of decisions and external factors.  

  • Excellent strategic thinking skills and proven strategic problem-solving ability, including driving to appropriate solutions.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including scientific writing, presenting, influencing, and negotiating.   

  • Influencing without authority, managing senior stakeholders and navigating ambiguity and conflict diplomatically.  

  • Vendor oversight experience. 

Digital competencies

  • Dedication to leading by example through intentional skill development, experimentation and fostering a culture of digital curiosity within the organization.

  • Experience working effectively with colleagues in virtual or remote settings, utilizing digital collaboration tools, incl. MS Teams.

  • Proficiency in leveraging digital tools, platforms, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technologies (including Microsoft Office suite) to communicate with impact and perform tasks efficiently and effectively. 

  • Understanding of cybersecurity threats and best practices to protect sensitive information and systems.

  • Prior experience in driving digital transformation initiatives, showcasing a strategic mindset towards technology innovation and integration with daily work practices.  

EDUCATION, LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced degree (MD, PharmD, PhD) required, although years of experience may be considered depending on past relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, and/or clinical work, research, or academic endeavors 

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or relevant clinical experience, or equivalent combination with demonstrated leadership responsibilities within Medical/Scientific Affairs.

  • Direct people management experience – an asset

  • Experience in gastroenterology – an asset.

  • Bilingual (English/French) – an asset

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is a head-office based position in Toronto, Canada.

  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required.

Base Salary Range:

$199,000.00 - $273,900.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
